Barbarian Altanis: The Matmata Caverns
Matmata Caverns (5 x 15m) Geothermal caverns, also worked stone areas located under
The Barbarians of Lost Altanis are a vastly diverse and extremely warlike lot amongst themselves and toward nearly all outsiders and there is little they have in common. But there is one cause they are united in- the fear of and protection of their sacred burial grounds under
If even the whisper of an interloping expedition reaches the ears of one their tribal shamans; a bloody vendetta involving all ten tribes will commence against any adventurers who try; culminating in no less than a rising of all the tribes and a barbarian war that will set all the southern borders of the One Realm of the Invincible Overlord aflame up to the very walls of impregnable Fortress Rhamasadron.
For this reason and with very good common sense, the Overlord has forbidden any such treasure hunting as well. If rumors of such an expedition into the Matmata Caverns should be discovered by The Black Lotus, it will result in the immediate incarceration of any adventurers who try such a blasphemous journey.
Nonetheless, rumors and whispers of the fabulous treasures lost within the caverns have tantalized gold hunting adventurers for centuries. Not even evil legends and stories of the hideous monsters living inside the caverns; or reports of countless legions of undead warriors guarding sacred shrines to Mictlantecuhtli (the Altanian Death god) inside the caverns; nor even dire warnings of deific curses of the Altanian gods upon all who dare to raid the lost burial grounds in the caverns; has ever deterred greedy adventurers from trying their hand at being the first to successfully raid and win treasures beyond all imaginings from the darkest depths of this hideous accursed place. One fact remains. NO ONE who has ever entered the Matmata Caverns to raid the dead Kings tombs- has ever returned alive to the world of men. EVER.
“…Most infamous is cursed Lemur Mountain, in its roots are the labyrinthine Matmata Caverns; whence it is whispered forgotten Altanian tombs lay buried. The mountain is said to be home to a powerful family of Lich Kings from lost Altanian days.”~ (from Barbarian Altanis: Beyond the Border, published 1310 CC, Sages Guild of
